Causes of Water Pollution

Polluted Rivers

There are many causes of water pollution. Water pollution has a negative impact on our environment. Knowing what the causes of water pollution are will help us to stop the pollution and to protect our environment so it can be enjoyed by many generations to come.

Many rivers are polluted due to water flowing into them from industry or through untreated sewerage that comes from broken drains.

Rubbish on the Beach

Rubbish on the beach contributes to water pollution. Rubbish can get swept into the water and cause harm to birds, fish and other wildlife. This in turn can cause far reaching harm to the fragile balance of the sea.

Pollution from Farms

Pesticides, insecticides, fertilizers and other farm chemicals can offer significant benefits to farmers. However when they get into the water table these chemicals can cause damage and be a major pollution problem.

Untreated Sewerage

Untreated sewerage is still pumped into the sea in many parts of the world. This is a major contributor to water pollution. The untreated sewerage pollutes the water and the beaches.

Industry has traditionally been a major source of water pollution. Although things are changing and many industries are aware of the issues that surround polluting water, this is still a significant problem in many parts of the world.

Dirty Beaches

Dirty beaches are a hazard to the environment as well as being unpleasant places to visit. Keeping beaches free from water pollution is vital for many reasons. Clean beaches attract more visitors and this is important for places where eco-tourism plays a significant part in the economy.

Toxic Waste

Toxic waste from shipping can be a real health hazard and can damage the environment. Many toxic chemicals are shipped around the world and damage to boats and accidents can result in these harmful chemicals being released into the sea.

Reduce Water Pollution

Keeping our water free from pollution is important for the long term health of our planet. There are many steps that we, as individuals, can take. These range from small steps, such as not dropping waste on a beach, through to bigger commitments such as joining environmental campaigns. Every step, however small, can have a positive impact on our environment.
