Making a difference, one footprint at a time

Google PowerMeter Monitors Electricity Usage

by Sally Painter on November 06, 2009

You may be like many people and dread looking at your new power bill. Wouldn’t it be nice to know in advance just how much energy your household has consumed and when your peak usage is? By using Google’s in-home energy management device, you can actually learn your peak times and take steps to reduce your electrical consumption accordingly.

There are a few things you’ll need, however, like a utility smart meter or consumer-owned electricity management device. What a mouthful! Still, Google saw a need since many of the current smart meters on the market don’t display helpful consumer information.

Google.org has a solution and stated that it’s working with the federal and state governments so consumers can get this information quickly and easily. The goal is to empower consumers and present the opportunity for more than just electricity monitoring, but an entire ecosystem that presents all kinds of information and services to help you be more efficient and learn how you can reduce your energy consumption. It will save you money and help reduce footprints all over the country and eventually the world.
Of course, to take advantage of the free Google PowerMeter, you’ll need to purchase Google’s in-home energy monitoring equipment, and then all you’ll need to do is connect to the Google PowerMeter and let the device feed data to your online account, viewed through iGoogle. The goal is for this kind of device to revolutionize the electricity consumer industry so consumers become active participants in their daily energy consumption.
