Ways to Reduce Carbon Footprint

From LoveToKnow GreenLiving

Many people are looking for ways to reduce carbon footprint concerns. Fears about how the carbon footprint of individuals, corporations and organizations are affecting the environment means that action needs to be taken now.

Plant trees to reduce carbon.

The term carbon footprint is used to describe the impact that we have on the environment. It calculates the amount of carbon and emissions that we generate ourselves through direct activity, for instance driving a car. It also takes into account the amount of carbon and emissions that we generate through secondary activities, for instance the carbon that is produced by items we consume. Reducing the amount of carbon and green house gases that we generate will have a positive impact on the environment. There are many ways to reduce carbon footprint concerns.

Ways to Reduce Carbon Footprint Concerns

Everyone can take steps towards reducing their carbon footprint. Every step counts, however small, and therefore there are plenty of ways that we as individuals as well as large corporations can reduce our impact on the environment. Reducing the burning of fossil fuels will help to reduce the amount of carbon emitted. Fossil fuels are used as an energy source and are burned every day. The burning of fossil fuels isn't just the burning of coal in a fire or gasoline in a car, it also includes the burning of fuel used to transport food or other products and a large variety of other ways. There are many steps that are being taken and important developments that will reduce our dependency on fossil fuels.

Hybrid Cars

Hybrid cars use a variety of different fuel sources and this reduces the amount of gasoline that is consumed. In return, this reduces the amount of carbon that is emitted and thus reduces the carbon footprint. Hybrid cars typically combine conventional combustion engines with an electric battery. In addition to hybrid cars, there are an increasing number of electric cars available and these do not burn gasoline at all and are powered completely by electricity.

Alternative Fuels

Exploring ways to reduce our dependency on fossil fuels has long been a priority with environmentalists. Fossil fuels are not a renewable resource so as supplies get depleted, alternatives have to be found. Alternatives to fossil fuels are also often kinder to the environment. Solar and wind power, for instance, are totally renewable and are regarded as a clean source of energy. Alternative fuel sources are becoming increasingly mainstream. In some countries alternative fuels now count for a significant proportion of power used. Technological developments mean that the efficiencies of alternative fuel systems are improving, making them an increasingly attractive option.

Offsetting Carbon

One way that many people and organizations reduce their carbon footprint is to offset the carbon generated in some way. This is typically done by planting trees. Trees absorb carbon from the atmosphere, therefore the principle of carbon offsetting is to plant trees that will absorb some of the carbon that you have generated. This is particularly popular with travel companies who encourage travelers to offset the carbon that has been generated by the trip by planting the relevant number of trees.

Buy Local

A significant amount of carbon is generated by shipping goods and products around the world. While it may be economically cheaper to get goods manufactured in other countries, it can have a high cost on the environment. Buying locally reduces the carbon footprint of a product. The smallest carbon footprint is generated, of course, by growing food at home, but even if this is not practical, there are many farmers markets and local stores which supply food grown locally. This supports a local community as well as being a way to reduce carbon footprint concerns.

Reducing our carbon footprint is an important part of green living. There are many steps that can be taken and everyone, however small, can have a far reaching impact.
