Used Solar Panels
From LoveToKnow GreenLiving
Used solar panels can be a great solution for people looking to use solar energy while also reducing the start up costs normally associated with solar panels.
Solar energy is an increasingly important alternative to traditional energy sources. Unlike coal or gas, solar power is completely renewable and has minimum impact on the environment. When a solar system is up and running, the costs of running such a system are minimal. The sun's energy is harnessed using solar panels. Solar panels can operate small garden accessories such as decorative lights or supply an entire group of houses with electricity. The main drawback that stops many people from pursuing solar power is the cost of the panels. Finding low cost or even free solar panels is a useful way to make solar energy affordable. One way to find low cost solar panels is to look for used solar panels. These can be old panels that are being replaced, panels that are no longer in use or surplus stock.
Buying Used Solar Panels
While used or second hand solar panels can be an absolute bargain, there are some factors to consider to avoid disappointment. Even if a solar panel is free, there is still likely to be costs associated with picking the panel up and buying equipment. Finding at the very end of the process that a panel will not work can waste time and money. The risk that someone is prepared to take when buying a used panel will largely depend on their experience and knowledge. Some people can repair burned out or damaged components, whereas others are looking for a panel which is ready to install.
Before buying used solar panels, there are some important things to consider:
- Old technology – when buying second hand or used solar panels, it is important to check and make sure that the technology is not obsolete. Solar technology is moving forward so quickly, there have been significant developments over recent years that can make very old panels obsolete. This is not to say that they don't have a value. They might not, however, be the bargain that they first appear to be. Older panels also use up more space than new panels and this is an important consideration for people where space is limited.
- Damaged stock – solar panels are hard wearing and long lasting. This does not mean that they cannot become damaged. Before buying a used or second hand solar panel, it is important to make sure that the panel is not damaged and what, if any, warranty the supplier is prepared to give. Ask to see the panel working if possible. This will give a good indication of any problems.
- Expensive add-on costs – solar panels require other equipment in order for them to work. This ranges from stands to hold the panels through to batteries to store the energy. A used panel may appear an absolute bargain, however when other costs are taken into account this may not be the case.
- Support – suppliers selling new solar panels often offer extensive help and support. This is typically not the case when buying second hand panels. While expert or knowledgeable fitters may be able to work without help, other people need advice and support.
Finding Used or Second Hand Solar Panels
Used solar panels are highly sought after. They are often snapped up by people interested in DIY solar panels as soon as they become available. People may therefore find it useful to advertise that they are looking for second hand panels rather than just waiting for some to become available. Used panels can sometimes be found on online auction sites such as eBay. This can be a great way to find panels from all over the country or hard-to-find makes of solar panel. The delivery cost can be significant, however, and this may make sourcing solar panels from places that are too far away an impractical option.

A used solar panel can be a great alternative to new panels and provide a wonderful way to generate energy for free.
