Tesla Electric Car

From LoveToKnow GreenLiving

The award-winning Tesla electric car is a model of quality design and top-notch performance. A commitment to green living definitely doesn’t mean being boring; on the contrary, a Tesla car is at the cutting edge of both environmentalism and style.

How a Tesla Electric Car Works

An electric car is much simpler than a conventional car. There are fewer pieces that comprise the motor and fewer parts overall. This means the car weighs less, which is an added bonus for the planet, and that there are fewer parts that can break down or wear out, which is an added bonus for you. The Tesla Roadster has four main components:

  • The Energy Storage System (ESS). This is the “fuel tank.” A combination of lithium ion technology and unique design create a battery that is light, durable, recyclable and powerful. The Roadster can accelerate from 0 to 60 in under four seconds. It can also go roughly 245 miles between charges.
  • The Motor. Surprisingly small and light and a model of efficiency, the motor converts up to 95 percent of the electricity received into rotational energy, rather than useless heat.
  • The Transmission. There are only two forward gears in the Roadster, and unlike a manual transmission, the car will not stall if shifted into the wrong gear. There’s also no clutch pedal, so that all you have to do is move the lever to adjust from a standstill to full speed.
  • The Power Electronics Module (PEM). The PEM is the conduit between your gear shifts or accelerations and the motor. It monitors all the voltages associated with the Roadster’s operation.

The Environmental Benefits

Two words say everything you need to know about the benefits of the Tesla electric car: zero emissions. The recent findings of the UN Panel on the environment say it is urgent that emissions be decreased worldwide within the next several years if we’re to avoid disastrous climate change. In cities like Los Angeles, where daily driving, often over long distances and in heavy traffic is unavoidable, the necessity for a car that gives off zero emissions cannot be overstated. Even better, a Tesla electric car can be charged up using renewable energy. Even if you don’t live in sunny Southern California, you can install solar panels to fuel your car. Tesla Motors is partnered with a solar installation company, Solar City, whom you can contact to discuss the possibility of going solar at home.

The Roadster’s Performance

For anyone who thinks you need an internal combustion engine to get serious driving performance, the Tesla Roadster is happy to prove you wrong. It accelerates so strongly, you actually have to be careful, because you can suddenly find yourself driving at too high a speed for the road. The car is consistently responsive and moves at maximum power while maintaining energy efficiency.

Safety Features

Accidents will happen, and Tesla has designed its car to offer you the maximum protection from even the hardest collisions. The car features a 4-channel anti-lock braking system, which will give you full steering control without locking up. The system was tested on frozen lakes and icy roads in Sweden and received top marks. There are also driver and passenger airbags, rollover protection and energy-absorbing sections in the car’s front and back.

Additionally, the battery and charging system are all designed to prevent accidental touching, shorting or leaking.

Further Savings and Benefits

While the initial cost of the cars can seem prohibitive, many states, like California, will offer a rebate and tax incentives for buying low and zero emission cars. Furthermore, the savings in the gas and oil you won’t need will add up quickly.

When you consider what the need for oil has done to the planet, both in terms of the environment and world politics, the argument for a car that doesn’t require oil is that much stronger. An electric car ultimately pays for itself.
