Fuel Efficient SUV
From LoveToKnow GreenLiving
The term "fuel efficient SUV" sounds like an oxymoron. However, in recent years the major car manufacturers have started to address this market. Many people want to save on fuel costs and help preserve the planet but they need the versatility and space of an SUV.
Enter the hybrid SUV. Manufacturers such as Toyota, Ford and Mercury offer hybrid-model SUVs.
If you're buying a hybrid to realize cost savings, do the math to determine when you will realize a price break. Hybrids are usually priced higher than standard vehicles. Consider how long it will take to receive a return in fuel savings.
The good news for those who can't afford a hybrid is that standard gasoline-based SUVS are also made in fuel efficient models. Most experts consider 32 miles per gallon efficient gas mileage. As you can see from the chart below, non-hybrid SUVS often achieve better mileage than hybrid models.
The below list of fuel efficient SUVs is based on information from the auto manufacturer's marketing materials. An n/a on the chart means the information was not available. Crossovers are included in this comparison, as they offer many of the same qualities as SUVs. The chart highlights common fuel efficient SUVS, their average overall mileage per gallon, starting price and whether or not they are hybrid models.
| Hybrid | Overall MPG | Starting Price | Hybrid? |
| Ford Escape | 32.5 | $29,300 | Yes |
| Saturn VUE | 26 | $23,700 | No |
| Toyota Highlander | 26 | $37,500 | Yes |
| Lexus RX 400 | n/a | $42,800 | Yes |
| Mazda Tribute 2009 | 32.5 | n/a | Yes |
| Mercury Mariner | 32.5 | $22,300 | Yes |
| Honda Element | 22.5 | $21,000 | No |
| Honda CR-V | 23.5 | $21,000 | No |
| Toyota RAV 4 | 24 | $21,500 | No |
Toyota, Saturn and Honda models achieve the best overall mileage. This information may vary when you compare highway driving versus city driving. Before you purchase an SUV, determine where you plan to do the bulk of your driving and plan the model that meets your needs based on price, fuel economy, space and style.
Manufacturers are adding new models rapidly as they work to address environmental concerns and fluctuating gasoline prices. Companies like BMW and Mercedes have shown some interesting futuristic, concept cars at automotive shows and are planning to bring some of them to market in the near future.
Taking Advantage of Fuel Efficient SUVs
No automobile will realize maximum fuel efficiency if it isn't operated accordingly. To achieve maximum fuel efficiency with your SUV, observe the following rules:
- Avoid fast starts and hard brakes and follow the speed limit. The most fuel efficient driving requires slow and steady acceleration. Once you hit your cruising speed, use cruise control to maintain your speed. Avoid tailgating so you won't have to break too fast.
- Limit drag. Don’t carry unnecessary heavy loads and try to keep the car windows rolled up while driving on the highway. Choose the most aerodynamic SUV model that you can afford.
- Map your trips in advance so you choose the most efficient route and try to bundle your errands to make fewer trips.
- Carpool with others. Since you're driving a roomy SUV, offer to carpool with neighbors, family members or coworkers. Not only does this cut down on fuel consumption, it can make driving more pleasant too.
- Remember that the most efficient driving is not driving at all. Leave the SUV at home and walk, ride a bike or take public transportation whenever possible.
