Fossil Eco Tote

From LoveToKnow GreenLiving

The Fossil Eco Tote was an affordable line of bags that allowed users to carry around their things in a low-impact and yet stylish way. Because the bags were simple and plainly adorned with an eco-themed print, they were also affordable. The retail price for these bags at stores such as Macy's was always below twenty dollars. Read the rest of this article to see the features of the Fossil Eco Tote and to see where you can still find one of these bags, or perhaps find a similar style of bag.

Details of the Fossil Eco Tote

The Fossil Eco Tote was a medium sized tote bag made from canvas. It originally came in three basic styles, although other styles followed. For example, one featured a simple bird print, another was a lovely patchwork pattern, and another was a simple tree print. The colors were soft and understated, and they had an earthy kind of aesthetic that worked well for people who were into understated fashion statements. The bags were 17.25" by 16" X 6" and sold for around eighteen dollars.

The Eco Tote was based on a simple premise. Sometimes you need a basic, unpretentious tote to throw random things in and haul them around. Some of the popular uses for these types of bags were for bringing things back and forth from work. You could put your lunch, a sweater, a snack, your cell phone, your iPod in a tote this size and you'd have everything you need for a day at the office. Students might use them for books, folders, pens, et cetera. And they're absolutely perfect for a trip to the beach, as you could easily fit a book and a beach towel and a tube of sun block inside. Some people even use Eco Totes as gym bags and carry a change of clothes to and from the gym in them.

The way these bags earned the label Eco was because they were perfect for using as shopping bags. Think about how many times you go to the grocery store and leave with half a dozen plastic bags in tow, even if you only purchased a handful of items. All that plastic has to end up somewhere, whether it be non-biodegradable trash in a landfill or as garbage floating in a waterway somewhere. By bringing an Eco Tote or two to the grocery store with you, you can save the world a few extra items of plastic waste every time you go to the grocery store. Over the course of a lifetime, these small gestures can really add up to a significant amount of waste reduction.

Don't forget the grocery store is not the only place you get plastic bags. Bags like the Eco Tote can also be taken with you to other shops where you can use them to bring your purchases home in a reusable, environmentally friendly manner.

Where to Buy One

Since the Eco Tote is no longer being manufactured by Fossil, finding a new one is going to be difficult. Check the online auction site eBay to see if anyone is selling a used Eco Tote. You might have more success finding a similar style of bag. Recently, grocery stores like Whole Foods and even Wal-Mart have begun selling canvas bags at the checkout stand that are very similar to the Eco Tote. Available for very little money, sometimes less than one dollar, these bags are offered to shoppers as a more environmental option to taking their groceries home in plastic bags. However, if you're looking for something a bit more stylish than a grocery store bag, check out Eco Bags and explore some of their canvas totes.
