Eco Canteen
From LoveToKnow GreenLiving
The Eco Canteen company promotes water bottles made from light-weight, high-quality, food-grade stainless steel. The Eco Canteen motto? "Kick the plastic habit and protect your family." Available for purchase on the Eco Canteen website, public opinion is divided on this product.
What Is An Eco Canteen?
Eco Canteens can be found online at the Eco Canteen website. These BPA free, stainless steel drink containers come in both adult and children sizes. The adult size is twenty-six ounces and Eco Canteen encourages to "ask about new kids sizes when ordering." After some searching on the website, the kid’s size is twelve ounces.
The Eco Canteen fits car cup holders, has a wide opening with enough room to add ice, and is dishwasher safe. Eco Canteen offers a bonus with each bottle ordered, a free insulated tote that promises to keep your beverage cold or hot all day. If you purchase the Eco Canteen you will be charged shipping and the free insulated tote requires you pay additional shipping and handling charges.
This As seen on TV water bottle is reusable and Eco Canteen offers a short video on their website that includes information on plastic bottles in landfills and buying water in plastic bottles versus using the Eco Canteen.
Eco Canteen Complaints
Search for Eco Canteen Complaints on the Internet and you’ll find quite a few. The Complaints Board website offers customer complaints as well as a response from the Eco Canteen Company. Most of the complaints are due to the fine print for the free bonus insulated tote.
- Insulated Tote – Eco Canteen offers a free bonus insulated tote with every water bottle purchased. The company charges customers a price for the water bottle itself, shipping and handling for the water bottle, and additional shipping and handling for the free insulated tote. Complaints here regard Eco Canteen’s non-disclosure about all the shipping and handling fees in addition to the cost of the water bottle. Consumers are complaining because even though they are charged additional shipping and handling for each item, all items are shipped in one package.
- Customer Service – The Eco Canteen customer service department has received complaints as well. Consumers find they can’t speak to a live person and the phone call directs you to use their “web chat” feature. Eco Canteen will not let you contact customer service about your order until it ships, which has been a problem for some customers because if they decide to send the Eco Canteen back as a fifteen percent re-stocking fee is charged. That fifteen percent re-stocking fee includes what you paid in shipping and handling charges.
- Website – If you visit the company website, and decide the Eco Canteen is not for you, when you navigate away from the website, you will experience a pop-up window. In the pop-up window, the Eco Canteen Company offers you either the adult or children’s size canteen at half the price from their original website offer, although additional shipping and handling applies as with their original offer.
- Disclaimer and URL – Apparently, you can get to the Eco Canteen website with two different URLs. One is a .COM web address and the other is .ORG. The Complaints Board website offers a response from Eco Canteen about all the disclaimers on the .ORG page, however, when you attempt to find the company through an Internet search, most consumers will be directed to the .COM website. Eco Canteen does say on the Complaints Board that customers are asked if they want to upgrade their bottle for an extra price and that the offer of that upgrade is revealed on their .ORG web page. Looking through the .ORG disclaimers, the upgrade offer couldn’t be found. They also insist the free insulate tote is an essential to keep hands safe from very cold or hot drinks, meaning if you buy the bottle, you also get the tote whether you want it or not.
Summing Up the Eco Canteen
Stainless steel beverage containers are becoming more popular and come in all shapes and sizes. There is no question that any water container that is BPA free is better for our environment. Eco Canteen claims the additional shipping and handling charges when added to the price of the canteen is still cheaper than some of its competitors.
Due to the high amount of consumer complaints in the customer service, disclaimer, and re-stocking fee areas, most stainless steel water bottle buyers are turning toward containers and canteens they can find locally without the hassle of company policies.
